How To Win A Sales Argument is the title of a book my father gave to me when I first started selling. The book was written by Richard Borden and Alvin Busse and published in 1926, almost 100 years ago.
Why Use The Term “Sales Argument”?
“Argument” comes from the Latin word “arguere” which meant to make clear or prove. Through the years into middle English the meaning changed to the process of reasoning. While in current use, “argument” has a negative connotation, perhaps in 1926 it was a more acceptable.
What Did Borden and Busse Mean By “Sales Argument”?
For years this little book remained hidden in a box of stuff collected after my father died. I had looked at the title many times and thought: “how negative could this book be?” And then put the book aside. Recently I was browsing the bookshelves looking for blog inspiration. I pulled the book off the shelf and started paging through it. Was I amazed! The authors put forth 5 principles for winning a sales argument. Turns out those principles are as relevant now as they were in 1926. The language is perhaps more abrupt than I would use today but they are the principles in use today by the great sales people. I’ll paraphrase them here:
Don’t Do All The Talking Yourself
Now we say we have two ears and one mouth. Listen more than talk. By asking good questions we can learn about our customer, their problems and how to solve them. When we listen actively the customer feels respected and will open up to our queries.
Don’t Interrupt
You have had the experience where in conversation you can’t get a complete thought out because of being interrupted. Borden and Busse make the point that your interrupting your customer just serves to irritate them. Resist the impulse to immediately respond with “a brilliant, immediately crushing retort.” The goal is to get the order. Using strategy and tact is the better way to get your customer “-a touchy, emotional, somewhat vain human being-“ to award you the order. Rather than interrupting the customer when they are speaking note your question and ask it at an appropriate time.
Have A Calm and Confident Demeanor
The authors put it this way: “Avoid an argumentative attitude that is belligerently positive!” The point being two people yelling at each other won’t come to a successful conclusion. You may have noticed that during conversations people mirror one another in tone and volume. When great salespeople are “suave and conservative in statement” they control the conversation and win the “sales argument.”
Ask Questions
By asking open-ended questions focused on the customer and their wants or needs the great salesperson finds out how to close the sale. Borden and Busse present this principle more like and attorney preparing for trial than a great sales person looking to form or maintain a long-term, mutually beneficial relationship. Nevertheless their premise of finding out all you can about the customer and their problem before making a presentation is valid today.
Confirm The Facts
During the course of a sales cycle, great salespeople have several conversations with decision makers and their team. At each stage of the sales cycle it is important to confirm previous conversations. This shows the customer you have an understanding of their problem and confirms your solution is the desired one. The best salespeople do this by again asking questions. The authors suggest confirming your customer’s answer to each of your questions as you move along. Great salespeople do this with tact as the conversation develops. Confirmation is particularly important when dealing with an objection. By restating the objection and getting confirmation from the customer you are better prepared to overcome it.
What You Can Do Right Now
